MANUFACTURING OF SULPHURIC ACID
STAGE
I à TO PRODUCE SULPHUR OXIDE , SO2
- Sulphur is burned in dry
air to produce Sulphur dioxide
- Chemical
equation : S +o2 à so2
STAGE II à TO PRODUCE SULPHUR TRIOXIDE , SO3
- A
mixture of Sulphur dioxide gas & air is passed over
vanadium(v) oxide , V2o5 which
is used as a catalyst at a temperature of 450o c – 500o c
and under the pressure of q atm.
- Chemical
equation : 2so2 + O2 ⇌ 2SO3
STAGE
III à TO
PRODUCE SULHURIC ACID , H2SO4
- Sulphur
trioxide is dissolved in concentrated sulhuric acid to produce oleum, H2S2O7
- Chemical
equation : SO3 + H2SO4 à H2S2O7
- Oleum
is dissolved in water to produce sulphuric acid
- Chemical
equation : H2S2O7 + H2O à 2H2SO4
